Pennies Over Dimes

As kids,
We chose the pennies
Over the dimes.
We associated size with value.
We didn't know that dimes are worth ten times as pennies.
We thought
It's bigger
It's worth more.
As kids,
We thought bigger was better.
As teens,
We skipped meals
And stressed over our not so flat stomachs.
We associated size with value.
We didn't realize that health is worth ten times as much as pounds.
We thought
It's skinnier
It's prettier
It's worth more.
As teens,
We thought thinner was better.
As adults,
We worked long hours
Instead of spending time with our loved ones.
We didn't realize that happiness is worth ten times as much as money.
We thought
It's currency.
It's necessary.
It's worth more.
As adults,
We thought money would make us happy.
As elderly,
We realized dimes and health and happiness are all worth so much more
Than pennies, flat stomachs, and money.
We associated happiness and peace with value.
We realized that life is worth ten times as much as worries.
We thought
It's simpler
It's kinder
It's worth more.
As elderly,
We realized living was better.
And it was too late.
