Out of the Dark

Classes were easy and I was quiet

life was going and going

but it all stopped

Cancer hit the family

I was at a loss for words

Teachers taught and students learned

and I suffered with my grandfather

his illness tore me apart

School was all I had

Lessons came and went

and so did my energy

Then came a novel

a novel about slams and expression

It was my way out of the dark

I learned to speak and feel

and make others listen

I became aware of the power of words

how my words could reach deep

and bring it out feelings lost long ago

I learned that my feelings were their feelings

and snapping was a recognition of this
