Night

Location

Growing tall around me, towering over my head

Like gentle giants, they are ancient.

In the vastness that is the universe, this earth is so small,

But I am smaller.

The blanket of night, which drapes itself over us,

Moon after moon, set by time and space,

Expands around me.

And suddenly, I shrink further,

Vastly smaller than before, somehow,

And my tiny breath escapes my lungs,

Urging me to sleep.

Eyes—willful and worried eyes—

Fight the ever-present darkness,

Search for tiny star-lit specks of hope,

But come up short.

The giants rise in the darkness,

Conquering the fear which lurks within me,

Reminding me that I am weaker,

And smaller too.

With arms outstretched, and lungs begging for air,

I pierce the quiet night with my fearful pleas,

Voice ringing out, among the giants,

And search for you.

I search for life.

Reach down,

Pick me from where I am planted,

And take me with you.
