Life’s Story

part of me always felt the leaving,

the apartness, the loneliness.

But we endured it quietly.

Could we fault tradition?

Could we fault war?

Could we fault each other?

We may have been separate,

but we were held together by life’s story.

Thousand,

hundred, ten, one;

a million different numbers could be named.

It would not matter how many times

our paths crossed,

we were still meant to let go.

We could not change the circumstances.

We could not change the past.

We could not blame ourselves.

It was the way God meant it.

Faulted or not,

what has been doled, has been doled.

It falls upon us to endure.

Splendid

thoughts of what used to be,

were changed to fear.

Death would find me once you left.

I never believed in what your sacrifices

would bring me in our parting.

The freedoms, the opportunities,

Uncountable.

Suns,

and planets and solar systems and galaxies

can not amount

to the regret I feel for being wrong.

Death did claim a price,

and you were it.

We may not fault.

We may not change.

But we may wish

to see those,

A Thousand Splendid Suns

that hide behind her walls

for one last time.

(parts quoted from Khaled Hosseini's novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns)
