Let's Talk, America/My Country and Me

Hey, America, it’s really nice to meet you

let’s talk about the things that you agreed to

Not talking to the country, I’m talking to the man

who took her name

who we get to blame

Just like you agreed to.

Let’s talk about the fear in education

you put the fear of God in

‘cause you put a nimrod in;

Talk about the metaphorical lynchpin

Sitting on our coffin

Never wants to listen;

Talk about the ones who make the nation

Haven’t left the station

Put them on probation;

Talk about the children

Talk about the neighbors

Talk about the buildings

and the favors for our labor.

Talk about the arts

Talk about the Earth

Talk about our hearts

and the battle for our worth.

Talk about my sisters who are drowning in the mire.

Talk about my brothers who were caught in the crossfire.

Talk about the past

how it never did last.

How we never asked

to solidify the caste.

How history repeats itself

So I will never be afraid.

How we march night and day

so your dues won’t go unpaid.

Let’s talk, America, because I have in me a fear

that despite all I’ve said, I may never make it clear.

Let’s talk about the citizens that you refuse to see:

Let’s talk about my sisters, my brothers, and me.

You can’t ignore us forever

my country and me.
