guess what I did today?

Today I told a girl what “menstruation” is

and she’s seventeen

she’s been doing that

for four years

and no one ever explained it to her

Don’t you flinch

Period. Tampons.

Thick, red blood on her hands

when she was thirteen and confused

I have other words that scare you.

Vagina. Transgender. Cliterous.

And I guess she couldn’t talk to her mom

because now she’s asking me

what it all means, now that

someone made a joke she didn’t understand

Uterus. Ovaries. Bisexual.

Such a wide range of terms and labels

somehow all lumped together in her head

filed under “scary”

“Dirty”

“Ungodly”

“Taboo”

Because I guess understanding your body

is against school policy now?

The only word that should be in there

is “ignorance”

For the love of God

Just because our test scores are higher

than a regular school

doesn’t mean we have any idea

what is going on.
