I was pushed in school

To decide my fate

I was pushed by my parents

To get the best grades

I was pushed by society

To live up to everyone's expectations

And yet I stay sane

I wanted to be a vet

For years and years

But then I watched a surgery

And I could not take it

By then, I felt really lost

It had been my dream

I had no back-up plan

I had to find something new

I decided to apply for college

I made my major Biology

I knew I loved that science

But I was still unsure

I heard how hard the major was

So I thought I would change it

But then in AP Bio class

I ran into genetics

I learned about genetic disorders

And then I fell in love

I learned about DNA sequences

And mutations, and so much more!

Within a year, I became an expert

And I was in college by then

I aced the genetics unit

In my introductory biology class

In my second semester as a freshman

I began to tutor biology

I realized I could talk on and on

About the world of genetics

I started to look at jobs

That I would love in genetics

I then shadowed a genetic counselor

And I couldn't help but love it!

I want to educate the people

About genetic disorders

Whether you know or not,

You could carry a mutation!

Genetics is a wonderful world

And it really makes me happy

So now I know I've finally found

My dream job: genetic counselor
