If Only

In a world endlessly dark

immersed in hatred, in ash,

was nearly no life left to squander

no signs of the past

Perpetual eclipses

bombarded the Sun

until all light diminished from

all sources but one.

That tiny star was left to

give hope to the world,

that some day we'd reach it-

if only we could.

The last speckles of life

reached up for this light,

and as spirits arose,

the Sun won her fight.

After just moments, the life forms

forgot the grace of this gift,

and soon after came screams

as soon as it hit.

Light turned to flames as

she beamed and she burned,

nearly all life turned to ashes-

if only they'd learned.
