I Salute You

I salute you, dear veteran!
Long have you fought for our country.
You’ve been through so much, yet we take you for granted.
Why are so we oh so selfish?

I salute you, dear veteran!
For the courage and strength you show.
I know I could never achieve that which you have earned.
What can we do to thank you?

I salute you, dear veteran!
The fight, I know, was difficult.
You left your family to help your country.
I ask myself, could I have done it?

I salute you, dear veteran!
The horrors you may have seen, my mind cannot fathom.
People don’t understand what really went on, for we cannot see through your eyes.
Why would you give up so much just to help selfish people like me?

I salute you, dear veteran!
I wish the world would look upon you differently,
With respect, love, and honor.
Tell me, what more can we offer you in return for what you’ve done for us?

Again and again, I salute you, dear veteran!
