As I Lie Here in Mud

I remember the way you wore your hair;

I remember how I lost myself in your eyes

I remember the mutual looks of longing for each other

I wish I could have done so many things differently

As I lie here in mud

Your presence was euphoria; your laugh was music

Your touch took my breath away

I remember the time we almost held hands

That one walk in the park a summer afternoon

As I lie here in mud

The smoldering of our unrealized potential

A once bright flame, slowly suffocated to smoke four years ago

I wonder what more I could have done

A way to change our destinies

As I lie here in mud

You went your way, I went mine;

No words have been said between us since that time

Were we scared of each other? Did I not do enough?

You have no idea, dearly missed

How many questions my mind is plagued with

You now work vigorously for your education, armed with your textbooks

I now work vigorously for our country, armed with my M-4

I wonder if you ever think of me the way I think of you

I wonder if we’ll ever see each other again

As I lie here in mud
