I Am Defined

I Am Defined

Never was I Defined

I wasn't given books about my how bad I looked

or how good I became to those that don't speak but stare

Never was I defined

when I presented my best effort in front of individuals

that just judge and criticize

just judge and criticize

judge and criticize

what I do or what I wear

Never was I defined

as a caramel coated African American

who undoubtedly loves her culture

but hates the other half

because I never knew my hispainic roots

Never was I defined

when whispers around my family members

explained a comparison between

my sister's wrong actions for giving birth

at the age of 18 and my future as a teen

I was never Defined.

In their mind I was already a troublemaker

whose paths were painted like the yellow brick road

but at the end no pot of gold shown

Just like the hitch hikers who don't have

nowhere to go but they began by bringing up

there thumbs in an 90 degree angle

to anticipate and wait for a driver to see

there signal of distress.

I was never Defined.

I realized that I am only defined when I look to

the one I call creator

when I finish telling my mother that my college tuition is

paid in full

when I put a smile on everyone’s face

when I graduate from the place I spent 4 years of my life

training to go around the world as a journalist

and

building innovative technology to young kids

that have never heard of the internet

I define myself, and with this I learned

that in order to be myself I must believe in

ME,MYSELF,AND I

I am glad that I get to finally be defined.
