Him

Him

He’s been there with me through it all:

Every homecoming, birthday, and prom.

He’s the one I turn to each and every time

To make me happy when life is far from sublime

Every wedding, funeral, and celebration,

He’s been my rock and foundation.

In my life as far as men there are only three:

My Heavenly Father, Daddy, and He.

People assume there is more to the relationship

Than just being there for one another: true companionship.

He has always been my guy best friend,

But now into both best friend roles he must transcend.

He is all I have and need in this life,

My hope through struggle and strife,

Who makes me smile, laugh, and in all situations, glad,

And no matter what, at him I can only get but so mad

When I think back on everything we’ve done,

And on that day when my heart he won.

It’s been over three years but feels like yesterday

When that ninth-grade boy asked me to my dismay

To be his girlfriend and call him mine.

“Yes!” I answered, not yet recognizing the signs

That what we had wouldn’t be just another high school fling.

It didn’t take long to see he had something special to bring

To each and every life that would be affected

By his kind attitude and contagious laughter to be expected

From the guy who seemed to have it all together,

But behind the scenes was being tossed like a feather.

His parents were splitting and the kids saw him as a father.

He had to stay strong for them to hold the family together.

From school to football to work to home,

His work ethic is amazing; I am more proud than he knows.

Yet he made time for me through all the chaos,

And we have grown through good times and great loss.

He knows me better than anyone; so generous and caring.

For a friend I know he would do absolutely anything.

But in and through him all I see is Christ.

Everywhere he goes people recognize he shines his light.

His positive attitude emanates youthfulness and joy.

It is evident there is something different about that boy.

I know they see he has Jesus and that is what they desire.

I do not deserve him and I do not know how I acquired

Such an intelligent, handsome, hard-working lover of Christ

Who will protect and provide for me from morning ‘til night.

They say we’re too young to know we have found “the one,”

But they don’t know what we have already overcome.

A life of laughter without him I cannot possibly imagine;

Brandon: my happiness, my heart, my lifetime best friend
