Growing Pains

I have a full set of teeth

And their roots run deep

So I am in tune with their needs

And their pain tortures me also-

In a way they do not understand

I have a full set of teeth

But I remember when I only had a few

How I watched them grow with me

And I remember when I lost my very first one

How proud I was of her, how sad I was to watch her go

And instead of putting it under my pillow

I wanted to keep it with me forever

I did not understand

I had a full set of teeth

And then I kept losing them all

One after the other they left

And under the pillow they went

And in the morning, their absence was real

I had a full set of teeth

This fact hit me every single day

But time moved forward

And eventually those holes were filled with new teeth

Shiny new strangers

And they grew deep roots

And I took great care of them, just as I did the others

I have a full set of teeth

And they care about me as much as I care about them

Our needs are the same

Our pain is the same

And we remind each other that we're not alone
