The Great Escape

I trudge through the swamp

Bones aching

Muscles screaming

Drowning in murky waters

Lost among millions.

Take this way to freedom, they chant

Turn your foot to the right.

My ankles snap

Crawl towards the west, others whisper

That is how we escaped.

My body breaks

Curse this foul sludge!

Let the world burn in its putrid flesh!

I sob with bitter despair.

There is no real direction

No true success exists

I am nothing but alone and one.

One blink

And everything vanishes.

The swamp had never existed.

A barren plain lies before me.

I break into a run

The wind slicing my hair

Sunlight tickling my skin

Laughter slipping through my lips

Free at last.

And then I fly.
