The Future

Heavy weights bearing down

Faster and faster time moves in rhythm

Quicker, swept into anxious unthinking

Breathe, in and out, in and out

Time slows for a second, I can’t catch my breath

The road ahead is covered in reaching roots and gnarled branches

Out of control, thoughts of what I want

What I need, what I want my life to be

Will my vision be ripped away?

My dreams charred in the burning future?

Wait-breathe. In and out. Slow time when you can

I have done my duty to this world, showed it my bare soul

Left myself for dead in the wake of my fear

Can I control my erratic heart?

It beats in time to the pounding on the door

Will I open it? Or will I lock it tight

I will open it wide

Move through the bars I nailed in place

Reach out and touch my dreams
