Freedom and Shame

I made a wrong turn one day,
Went left instead of right
It took me away from everything I knew
And though maybe I should have felt afraid
I did not
I felt free
Free from my regrets
Free from my responsibilities
Free from my anger
Free from right and wrong
And maybe that turn was wrong but
Maybe it was fate
Maybe I don't care
And although that turn gave me life
And freedom,
It brought shame

Now you might say
Freedom and shame are two different feelings
But what I have found in my past experiences
Is that shame always follows freedom
The shame that you were going to ditch your family
Shame on you for feeling free
The shame that you were going to leave behind the walls you were building just so maybe you could find a castle
Shame on yourself for looking for an easy route
So, though you might feel freedom and shame differ
I believe they come together
And though they are both wonderful and frightening
I could not live without them
