Forgetting

Each day before they parted they told her,
“Remember”.
So she did,
she remembered,
keeping their faces
next to her heart
and listening to their voices
in the silence of her mind.

Each day after their reunion she asked them,
“Don’t you remember?”
And they shook their heads,
having forgotten,
glancing blankly at her face
while she wept
and wished that she had
no memory
of their voices.
