Chains

Poem

Her chains were all in her head
But somehow just as heavy
Every link a memory
Cast iron clips made up of events
Dragging behind her heels
Tugging down her shoulder blades
Gravity her worst enemy only second to her past
But one day she found someone
Pair of bolt cutters in his hand
Shimmering as bright as his eyes
He followed closely behind
Trimming away pain and worry one link at a time
Lightening the load she bore
Until one day her eyes glimpsed up
Unsure of her lightened shoulders
Only to meet his with her emerald jewels
And began leading him away
Hand in hand they moved
Dancing under the light of the moon
The remaining links twisting about their feet
Until they were linked together
A combination of rusted steel, memories, and pain
Holding two people close together under the stars
