Caged Bird

Do you ever feel paper thin?

See-through, transparent

Like everyone knows what you’re thinking

Even before you’re thinking it.

Do you ever feel naïve?

Inexperienced, unprepared

Like you’re the baby of them all

Even though you’re the oldest.

My parents say I’m mature

Others say I’m sensible for my age

But sometimes I just want to fit in

Sometimes I wish I could be like them.

Impulsive, irrational

Spontaneous, irrevocably careless

Confident in my stupidity

Never looking back.

Isn’t it ridiculous?

I know it is- don’t lie.

Yet I’m seeing birds flying, falling

While I sit in my cage asking why.
