The Box

Ding dong

Everyone loves the moment of the FedEx man delivers a package

Opening the door and receiving that brown-beige box makes you feel like it’s Christmas

On the walk to the table with the package in your hand you go though what it might be

But when you cut open the tape

And you look inside

nothing

nothing but a piece of paper no more than a single square inch

nothing but words that say

“it’s because of you”

at that moment, you realize how big 5x7 really is

and when you look at the return address

it’s from thefedexman

that's the moment your stomach falls into the world's deepest pit

the one source of happiness that brings the slightest light to your day

bruns out

the darkness you then sit in is darker than the one before

they say you never know what you have until it’s gone

but what if you’ve never had it in the first place

the void you wish to fill becomes even more massive

as the black hole struggles to find space to occupy as it gets bigger

you realize how small 5’7” really is

i didn’t look at “thefedexman” when i received the package

i can’t

“it’s because of you”
