Big Girl

Sat, 01/25/2014 - 16:39 -- Sanjana
My little feet
alone on the playground
they run away from me
No
they’re not scared
their footprints fade into the distance
I tell myself
I will be better than them one day
I want to be a big girl.

My little eyes
wander as the teacher talks
I’m deep in my day
dream
my dreams fade
as the sound of yelling interrupts
I open my eyes
only to wake up to anger
I tell myself
I will change one day
I want to be a big girl.

My little hands
cleaning up my tears
tears of pain
the pain of screams
Mr. Bear wraps his arms around me
I whisper to Mr. Bear
one day
I will be a big girl
I want to be a big girl.

Now
I am a big girl
the tall buildings
scare me
the long nights
scare me
the big waves
scare me
what lies ahead
scares me
I look back at my childhood
and
I whisper to myself
I don’t want to be a big girl anymore.
