Irresistible, the merry flute calls
From black valley and darkened hills.
It travels up the falls, leaping
And dancing on green carpets;
Top the cliff with harp so constant.

Soaring down from the clouds
Come singing violins and braying horn.
All joined rush upriver, with lonely base
Gliding beneath the surface.
Across the plains it tremors: melodious, sweet, soothing.

And bluebirds hearken,
And redwoods roar!
And then all to sleep.
All … but one.

One lone piano carries on;
While stillness waits with bated breath.
Then, like a net cast
In the deep of predawn pale,
Music continues.

This is why Bach is my favourite composer. Although I enjoy his cello suites, his full pieces are by far the most beautiful and completing (that is, I feel, as if nothing is missing) works.
