I was the sweater you put on after Summer,
when the weather started to get colder.
You were the voice I tuned on my car stereo,
every night when I left home.
I was a drifter all through the night,
throughout my life sang the same two lines;
"If I fell in love with you,
would you promise to be true?"
But if it wasn't for that cold Summer night,
on June fifteenth, nineteen-ninety nine.
Got inside of my car and looked me in the eye,
said you knew a spot where I should drive.
It was that spot on a vacant beach,
where I first drank until I couldn't breathe.
The taste of sour wine on the tip of my tongue,
that kept me warm while I held you in my arm.
I felt you shivering in your sleep,
so I gave you my sweater, for you to keep.
Hope that it will keep you warm,
a memento of me you could adore.
You kept your voice to your own,
until you heard that song play on the radio.
You started to sing under your breath,
but I heard every word that you said.
But if it wasn't for that cold Summer night,
I wouldn't have known what love feels like.
Got inside of my car and inside my heart.
Told me this was bound to break from the start.
Of course babe, we knew this was just a fling.
A Summer love that we felt between
the backseats of my car and on the beach.
On my car stereo, playing on repeat.
Please tell me you won't ever forget
all the borrowed time we shared and spent.
I saw you turn and wave goodbye,
on that last Summer night.
I was the sweater you gave back after Summer,
when our hearts became cold as stone.
You were the voice I turned off my car stereo,
every night when I went home.
