What is art to me?

Maybe it's Common and his metaphorical love affair with Hip-Hop

Maybe it's Ntozake Shange and her play that is composed of beautiful poems where inspiration could only come from God

Maybe it's Nikki Giovanni and her poetry that it's okay to go on an ego trip every now and then

Maybe it's Langston Hughes who taught me that my dreams are not to be deferred

And that I am no lesser because I am the darker sister

Maybe it's Gemineye who educated me on my "Poetic Bloodline" and that every man owes me a "Penny for My Thoughts"

Maybe it's Tupac and it's motivation to change for the better as a community and show some love to California in the mean time

Maybe it's Maya Angelou who told me that caged bird sings

And no matter what is thrown at me, I will always rise

Maybe its Mos Def who helped me realize just how close I was to the community around me

Maybe it's Jill Scott who told me just how powerful my "Rollin Hills" were and live my life like it's golden
