What’s going on mommy? Why am I on the ground?
Why aren’t you moving mommy? Why are there people all around?
We were at your friend’s house at a party on Christmas Eve.
But I was tired and cranky so we had to leave.
It was a long drive home and I fell asleep.
But I was woken up by a really loud beep.
The side of the car got really bright
Whatever it was must’ve been quite a sight.
You started screaming and daddy tried to move the car
Is that why you and him moved so far?

Why won’t you say something? Are you sleeping mommy?
There’s someone talking to me; he says his name is Tommy.
He says there was an accident; what does that mean?
He says the other driver was young, no more than seventeen.
Now Grandma’s here and she’s hugging me tight.
What’s she doing here so late at night?
Why are you crying grandma? What’s wrong?
Mommy will make it better; she’ll sing us a song.

Won’t you please sing mommy? It will make us feel better.
Why does the ground next to you keep getting wetter?
It’s not raining mommy, so what’s that near your head?
That’s a lot of water, but wait mommy, water isn’t red.
They’re putting a blanket over you; are you cold?
Grandma says you went to heaven, but I thought you only did that when you were old.

People are gathering and creating a crowd.
I know I shouldn’t cry and I’m being very loud.
Grandma can I see mommy? Why do you keep saying no?
Mommy I want to see you! Why won’t grandma let me go?
Who's that coming toward us? What’s he got with him?
Why does he have a needle? You know I don’t like them!

Grandma what happened? Where are we?
What is the doctor saying? Who wants to come see me?
Who are you, sir? What happened? Did you get hurt?
Why didn’t you get cleaned up? There’s blood all over your shirt.
Why are you sorry? What did you do?
What you drank was a home brew?

What does that mean grandma? What is his fault?
His reflexes were slower and he didn’t have time to halt.
You drove while drunk? Don’t you know that’s wrong?
Now I’ll never again hear my mommy and daddy’s songs.
Sorry won’t bring them back, but don’t worry about me.
I’ll be okay ‘cause mommy and daddy are watching over me.
