I'm Not A Kid Anymore

As I sat in class my freshman year,

I felt content and had no fear.

I was a big kid now, and to my content

I could still live life without consequence.

I was soon struck with a sense of unease

As I realized a piece of my family was leaving me.

He hugged me goodbye as he walked out of the door

And whispered, "I won't see you much anymore."

As the months went by, I could see her struggle.

Providing for her kids alone was taking a toll on her.

I knew I had to step up and contribute for her,

And that is when I realized I wasn't a kid anymore.

I was quick to get a license, so I could drive the kids to school.

I would sell my own clothes to make money for fuel.

Once I was of age, I searched for a paid position,

I became a waitress and helped relieve the situation.

As I sat in class my freshman year,

I felt content and had no fear.

If I knew then what I know now,

It would not have made a difference anyhow.

It is what it is and it just shows

That's how my story was intended to go.

My life has been good, but I know for sure

That is when I realized I wasn't a kid anymore.
