Dad
Remember when I used to follow you everywhere you went?
I would put my little fingers underneath whatever closed door you were behind..
When your friends would come over to have a few cold ones and your
Curfew was up, I would be there to say “daddy, get inside.”
You told me not to grow up to fast,
But that is what I did.
Pretty soon, everything u told me to do was a headache..
Get off my case dad, I will do it later
You had to work a lot and were hardly ever home..
How l loved it, because I could do whatever I wanted.
Soon, the weekends were a drag because
I knew that you would be home
Then I met a guy who was so wrong for me
You told me to be careful and surprise surprise
You didn’t like him
He is changing you, you told me…
Then I couldn’t wait to move out
I need my space, I said to you
It hurt to see me move away and live
Away from home, but I wanted to leave.
But I’m not a kid anymore dad, I always said
But I was a kid, dad. I was a kid
And now dad, I’m a young adult
And I need you…
Your back isn’t as straight as before
Your eyesight isn’t 20/20
You’ve lost a lot of weight
You hair is getting grey
While I was too busy growing up
Dad, you were getting older
Don’t leave me dad, please
Stay with me forever…
What am I going to do without
My dad? Who is going to scold me and
Tell me that I was wrong? That I need
To be careful?
I don’t want to be an adult Dad,
I want to be a kid again
So that you can be young again
Too!
