A Birth Contract

Because I love you, I will ensure that you are strong

Because I love you, this world will not tear you down

Because I love you, I will be there to pick you up when you have fallen

Because I love you, I will paint your nails, hold your purse, and sew your prom dress

Teach you to play baseball

Make late night trips for Playtex, Midol, and gummy bears

Because I love you, you will be among the most educated

Never forced to cook or clean

Never abused or beaten by my hand

Because I love you, I will never force you to wrap your hair, unless it be your choice

Never consider you unclean

Never force you to marry one you do not love

Because I love you, I will fight for equal pay

Your aspirations

You will never be hindered by man

Because I love you, I will never view a woman the same

You will not feel ashamed of your dark skin, your thick hair

You will be confident

Never objectified or hushed

Because I love you, I will teach you to defend yourself and be independent

You will know of Sojourner Truth, Billie Jean King, and Malala Yousafzai

You will know your strength

Because I love you, I will do my best to prepare you for a world of hate, inequality, and prejudice

Because I love you, I will not shield you from hurt but instead push you to overcome it

Because I love you, I will do the best that a father can
