The Rainforest Pelican

In the canopy

A toucan pokes its head out of a tree

Trying to live its life

In a place that is as busy as a bee hive

Having a vividly colored beak

With a body that is quite petite

Swift and elegant

One can say it’s the rainforest pelican

Though it doesn’t eat fish

Thinking a caterpillar and a papaya a suitable dish

With the rainforest rich and lavish

It never having to go home famished

When the forest may get a slight chill

All the other birds fly away at will

But the toucan stays perched in the trees

Hundreds in the canopy from what the eyes can see

Predators at bay

Bloodsucking creatures here to stay

A place where a human would never want to be caught alone

Is the place a toucan calls home
