Enough

Sun, 04/06/2014 - 17:53 -- NDM4

I'm tired of walking down the streets

With girls gripping my arms in fear

Fear of catcalls

Fear of men

Fear of bigots

and most of all: Fear of people without respect

I'm tired of hearing

"She was asking for it"

"She dressed like a slut"

"Men aren't victims"

"They never said no"

"You just need the right guy to fix you"

I've had it with

"You're going to hell"

"You're going through a phase"

"Faggot"

"Dyke"

"Tranny"

I'm sick of

the laughter

the comments behind my back

society telling me I'm something I'm not

the shame

I've had enough

Enough of the slut-shaming

Enough of victim blaming

Enough of perps getting away with it

Enough of the insults

Enough of society telling me who I am

Enough is enough

It's time to change

Stop the victim blaming

Stop rapists from raping

Stop spreading hate because of who a person is

Stop telling people who they're supposed to be

It needs to change

And it will change

Why?

Because I'll change it

One person at a time

Starting with the person who reads this

This poem is dedicated for all of those who have been victims of bigotry, sexual crime, slut-shaming, and a rigid society that refuses to accept people for who they are. It doesn't matter what flag you fly, what you wear, who you love, or where you're from, because to quote Dr. Seuss: "A person's a person, no matter how small."
