Hypocrites

Location

We all blame the magazines

Or the models

Or the men who tell us we need to

Look our best.

We check-in on the daily woes

Of who

And what

And where.

We tell one another that it’s okay

And we are not to blame

For what society is telling us.

That we are beautiful for being who we are.

Then we laugh

And scoff

At the girl who may not be just like us.

It’s human nature

Is what we keep telling ourselves.

But let’s blame society.

We secretly carry a knife in our back-pocket

For safe keeping

In case it comes in handy

To use on that boy who broke our heart

With his words.

So we can hurt him the way he hurt us.

But let’s blame society.

We realize that monsters do exist

But we are too scared to admit

That they lie within us

Or really

That they are us

Because we are the monsters.

Because we are society.

And we aren’t doing much

To stop the pain

And the hurt

From ever occurring again.
