Chasing Shadows

"For always," they said.

And, their cheeks were wet

With tears that they'd shed

For lives they'd live yet.

"I love you," they said.

They're young, thought not chaste

They've shared many beds,

And had many tastes.

"Beautiful," he said.

In her white dress she strode

Down a carpet of red.

Leaving seeds where she rode.

"Yes, I do," he said.

He looked into her eyes,

And saw there a dread

Overwhelming her guise.

"No, I don't," she replied.

Gasps spread through the place.

She thought how they'd lied,

She'd never seen his face...

Until then. She was sure.

There's a vision she had

Of their would-be future.

And her tears, then, were sad.

"For always," they'd said.

"I'll love you. I'll stay

The same. Just for you

I'll be there every day."

And years after, at first,

They'd stay true to their word.

They would love and they'd nurse

A true love they'd nurtured.

But, soon after, it'd rot

And one would start to change.

Now, it wasn't their fault.

There was no-one to blame,

But, he'd change, nonetheless.

And, she'd hate him for it,

He'd would break his promise

And that couldn't be fixed.

"'For always,' you said,

But you lied, this I know.

And, I can't be with you.

You have to let me go."

She turned and she went

And the sadder tears dried.

And, there in that moment,

About three souls died.
