Ever since I was a child
School taught me about 
Cause and effect -
That with every pull
There was a push
And for every action
There was a reaction.

Newton's Third Law says
Two bodies will exert
Equal and opposite magnitudes of force.
That was supposed to be
My college understanding of cause and effect.

But where in my textbooks did it say
That because I was drunk, 
He could take advantage of me?
Where in those thousand pages of text did it say
That because I was drunk,
I deserved it?

I learned all about the consequences
That gravity and friction held.
I learned about how gravity pulled me
While I pushed it.

I learned nothing about
The fact that I could not push him
Hard enough
Because the magnitudes of our forces
Were opposite, but not equal.

I learned nothing about
The fact that I would talk to nobody
Besides the demons in my head
As a reaction to his actions.
