Song of the Dogs

They are thoroughly domesticated-
and some unfortunates
are driven to the point of cowering.
They will gladly beg
for a bone
and to receive table scraps-
is to be in Heaven.
They will affectionately lick
the master's hand- whether it offers
a benevolent pat
on the head-
or a cruel beating.
They are esteemed-
for their
loyalty and service.
