Finding the Light
My dewy eyes reflected in the mirror;
I saw a girl affected by her past.
Chains tied to mountains weighing on her back
Prevented her from living the life she knew she was wasting.
Her burdens started to diminish her presence.
Slumped shoulders, downcast eyes, her lack of respect
For herself spoke volumes of the treatment she’d expect
Of others around her, uncomfortable and indifferent
To the girl they couldn’t understand.
She started to write, threw herself and her dreams
Onto pieces of paper she knew she’d never let anyone read
And found an escape from the difficulties she’d faced.
She wondered why this outlet took so long for her to find.
Through the writing, she changed her perspective.
Articulation was no longer an issue when she
Put pen to paper.
She realized her worth in those words.
She had something to say,
That before seemed too scary to reveal.
She opened up, first in the art and later in her life.
Blooming like a flower, she turned away from the
Poisoned soil around her and faced skywards.
Sometimes, people tried to make her feel invisible,
But she finally stopped giving in to the doubts.
A girl that was once afraid of talking to large groups of people
Now embraces her knowledge and lets it be known.
She slowly took the chains off and threw them in notebooks,
Gained the ability to rise above her surroundings
And recognize and cherish the parts that deserved her trust.
She turned to the sun and radiated in its warmth,
Absorbed in the newfound epiphany of self-worth,
Knowing her future will illuminate her life,
And understanding that she has finally found her voice.
