Animals need hope too

Beaten. Scared. Abused.
Wondering what they did wrong,
And so confused.
Ever since you brought them home
They trusted you.
Now every time you come around
They run from you.

Hungry. Thirsty. Crying.
Not knowing this isn't
how they should live.
Some turn skittish,
others turn violent.
Losing all hope.
Becoming defiant.

Slowly. Slowly. Dying.
Haven't seen the humans in days.
Stomachs won't quit growling.
Then some show up,
Never seen before.
Bringing food and water.
Trying to get us through the door.

Growling. Snarling. Barking.
It's a fight none the less.
Then they put some thing around our necks
Dragging us out the door
Stuck us in individual cages.
It was a drive
That felt like ages.

Snoring. Sleeping. Dreaming.
Woke up in a strange place.
All sorts of animals and humans.
Where am I?
Where are my friends?
A human comes and takes me.
Is this going to be the end?

Petting. Cooing. Playing.
These humans aren't like what I've seen before.
Instead of yelling and hitting.
They sweet talk and rub bellies.
I constantly get treats.
Yet, they say there's something better.
I'm thinking this is already so sweet.

Families. Adoption. Home.
It's adoption day!
Whatever that means.
Everyone is so excited.
I get brought out to a family of three.
The papers were signed,
They actually want me!

Love. Hugs. Kisses.
I have a new home!
My family is so nice.
We go for walks, and play outside.
My favorite game is chasing after the ball.
They even let me sleep in their bed.
Maybe there's hope after all.
