America Be Free

United States

The only place

I have ever lived

Since birth.

United States

It has its ways

Of being the best

And worst.

Although it may be

I can do as I please

Due to your dedication

To being free

I am only a exception

Of that bias dedication

One of geographical privilege

Though quite unexpected

My family and friends alike

Live fairly comfortable lives

No matter the situation at hand

Yet that is only by chance

For as the older I get,

I become less entranced

With the US and its

Unveiling flaws

The US I had known

The US I had seen

Is a mere bubble

As blissfully ignorant

As can be

For it was one without violence,

discrimination, or poverty,

One without hate,

Thus one many dream of,

Yet become less of

With each passing day.

I may not have been denied

Due to my skin or “bits,”

Or at least it was not as

Apparent as I could see.

Does not mean it doesn’t

Happen to others each day

A viewpoint not shared

By the privileged many.

For to them, they only

See what I had seen,

And as humans,

We can only see what we know.

And if we try and keep this view,

It will only worsen this place

We call home.

A blind eye to others’ suffering,

A practice all too common

Especially in the here and now.

Yet it is not a final moment

For our country, the here and now

For I believe we can overcome it

Somehow.

Whether it may be,

Within my lifetime or the next,

This country will come back

From its humble beginnings

once again.

So although it may soon seem

That the US will cease to be,

You can never be too sure,

For this was and always will be

The land of the free.
