the child is off to school,
with a kiss goodbye,
sharpened pencils, papers, and crayons,
the child off to school,
sent there for a good education,
not knowing what you're going to lose,
Mommy, I am five. In class today, we practiced hiding under our desk from the mass shootings. Mrs. Martin said it happens all too often and we need to prepare. I told her I am scared and don’t want to die. Mommy, I am only five.
There four kids sitting on the blockLiving life so fast they took just to watch Knowing every single day is a day they could get knocked
By some wayward hooligan driving up with a Glock
I wouldn’t be surprisedIf I ever diedDue to arms belonging to my own kind
But I know before I dieOnce I pray the pain subsidesI’ll have everything on my mind
The Gods still live
They can be seen everyday
If one knows where to look
Artemis is standing in the crowd of feminists
Wearing a pink-knit hat
Calling for equality
The land of the free
Home of the brave
America
Where children run and hide
From the ricocheting bullets
Clinging to their friends
Protecting those they love
