I walk for so long that I no longer sweat even when the sun beats down on me without apology.
I walk for so long that the hunger no longer effects me.
My feet are so bloody and warn that I have no other feeling in my body
“What makes me an American?” I ask in my prayers,
This question, like skin comes with multiple layers,
From night comes day as Her goods and her dangers,
But still we are loyal to a flag made by strangers,
