A world of need

This poem is supposed to be about

What I need

What I need?

What I can’t live without?
If you were stuck on an island.

What is the one thing you would have?

What I need?

What I need!?!

There are many things I need

But if I was stuck on an island

All alone to myself

I would pick up my guitar

And gladly sing a song to myself

Music is the food of love,

A vitamin for the soul!

But,

Why does this have to be about me

The world isn’t just filled with clones.

We are not all the same.

All unique in name.

Yet all one underneath.

Finding comfort in the sheets.

Of the people around us.

And from the things that surround us.

But what WE need is

love.

An underlying fact

But what is love?

Let’s talk about that

The girl on the corner.

Who waves her purse in the air.

only the love she knows.

Is the one men pay her for!

The little boy in school,

Who’s moved around quite a few

Only the love he knows.

Is when he does well in school.

The wife in the kitchen

Anticipating the arrival of her dear

Only the love she knows!

Is when her husband beats her to tears!

What we need is love!

And not the sappy

Easy going,

happy go lucky kind of love

We need the compassionate

Tender gentle love

The smile you get at the supermarket

From holding the door open wide

helping the lady who has gone blind in one eye.

The kind of love you see

When you stay up

till the sun smiles and

Greets you good morning

Because you have been up

All night

All night

Because your mother’s birthday is in the morning

So you decorated the house with all her favorite things

You made her breakfast in bed.

But when you walk up the stairs

And wander into her room

She looks at you and has no idea who you are!

Alzheimer's is killing her from the inside out.

But you persist

You persist because she’s the only mother you’ve ever had

You can remember the nights

When you were but small.

And the thunderstorms

Sound like the green eyed monster,

That lives under your bed,

Has grown three times in size

And shakes the whole house down

And you’re afraid that he will shake,

You’re house

To the

ground .

But your mother was there

She comforts

And says,

Don’t worry my child

It’s bowling night in heaven.

She holds you tight

And hums a hymn.

That.

There.

That is what love is.

Love is patient.

Love is kind .

Love is the kind of thing that comes from your insides!

That gives you butterflies in your stomach when you fall in love.

Love is so desperately needed

In a world broken up.

Divided by equals

With a sum that never

Adds up.

We need love because

Humans wouldn’t exist

Instead we would become dinosaurs

Ceasing to subsist.

What WE need is

love.

The kind of love a dog will give,

Even when it’s been starved from its previous owners.

What WE need is

Love!

The kind of look a child will give

When you give them a gift.

What WE need is

love!

What I need.

Is

Love.
