Why?

Why sit alone at lunch?
After all, you’re always alone.
You want some friends.
So go over.
Talk to them.
Why give into peer pressure when you know it’s wrong?
Or is it?
Why do the activities you do?
It’s just something to do.
Isn’t it?
Why are you just a little different?
Why make fun of someone for being different;
When we all ourselves are different?
After all, it’s just a word.
Different.
Why sit?
Why stand?
Why sing?
Why dance?
Why laugh?
Why cry?
Why love?
Why hate?
Why here?
Why now?
Why me?
Tell me.
Why?

I wrote this poem a few years ago, after talking about depression in one of my classes. It's not so much about depression or bullying as it is about trying to make people think about why they do what they do...why they treat certain people certain ways...because we are all different, and our differences make us the same.

I think the last line of your description, "we are all different, and our differences make us the same" is such a powerful statement, and something that more people need to be made aware of. Once we realize that we are not really that different, more people can be treated with the respect they deserve. Amazing poem!
