That Which Sails Us

Wind is that which sails our boat

Not a reason for you to gloat

Nor a reason for you to bend

But neither is it a reason for war

Winter squalls chill me to my core

Regardless of who’s deck caused the splinter

Wind is that which we’ve known

That which we’ve loved

Long before it touched the luff

Long before it curled off the leech

It’s an everlasting power

To catch

But not to abuse

Torn genoas lose our race

So I leave you with this:

A strong schooner can ride many a storm

Knowing warm waters lay ahead

But a becalmed skiff

Will eventually paddle to windier waters.
