Whenever

Whenever today is,

Are we young and in love?

On our first date?
Staying out too late?

Whenever today is,

Are we graduating college?
Am I walking down the aisle?
Were you making my heart smile?

Whenever today is,
Are we making plans for the future?
Vacations or long trips?

Watching our children learn to skip?

Whenever today is,

Are we spending time with each other?

Between the soccer and ballet

Studying and helping with an essay.

Whenever today is,

Are we old and gray?

Has one of us passed away?

Or is it just another ordinary day?

Whenever today is,

I look forward to tomorrow

And wish our time together can last

But I smile at our wonderful past.

Whenever today is

We look back and cherish

The good times,

The bad times,

And the sad times.

Whenever today is,

I rejoice knowing that tomorrow

We can do it all over again.

So I want us to say,

Hello future,

Hello past,

Our souls meet somewhere between this hollow space.

Whenever today is,

I’m staring at your handsome face

And when you sit and hold me tight,

I know our short life together is made right.

Whenever today is,

We remember our lives,

Together, Forever.

Knowing one thing is true

Sweetheart, I Love You
