When I Walk Again

I can see him now,
Itchin' in his pass-me-downs;
Roamin' the streets, so discreet,
as not to wear his shoes out.

He's asking those walking;
They claim to have nothing,
Like a dollar, or a lousy quarter...
But then go and use the soda machine.

"Next time," they said,
and that was the end.

Man to man he asks me,
For just a cheap bag of treats.
But I walk around, as I turn him down,
Because my pockets are empty.

"Next time," I said;
and that's exactly what I meant.

Do not forget, my friend;
For I'll see you then,
When I walk again.
