What Do I Want to Be ???
By: Lauren Meshack

What do I want to be? Let’s be honest, I really don’t know I’m only 17 and I’m supposed to pick something that I’m going to do for the rest of my life? Talk about pressure. So no, I do not know exactly what job I want to pursue, but I do know that whatever I do choose I want it to be my passion. I want to wake up every day and not feel as if I’m going to a job but as if I’m doing something I love and just happen to get paid for it.
I love so many things it’s so hard to choose to do one of them for a lifetime. I am a singer, dancer, actor, audio visual tech and I also play the violin. Not only do I do all of those things, I am actually good at them. One good thing about my choices are they are all in the same category of performing arts. If I had to choose, I would probably be a Broadway actor. That combines acting, dancing, and singing. It also would also help that I know audio visual effects.
What does it take to getting there? Well besides, having the skill and teaching or knowledge of acting and dancing and singing is, knowing people. I am constantly told by my theater and tech theater teachers that Knowing people will get you far.’ It’s just that kind of business” they would say. Who you know can get you in the door for great things.
As far as obstacle’s, I feel like me, myself is my biggest challenge. Having faith in myself and confidence to constantly go and tryout for shows or to stay motivated will be an obstacle I will have to overcome. Being a Broadway actress isn’t easy. There are going to be failures, once again “it comes with the business”. So it’s going to take a special kind of confidence, a special kind of faith to go and audition for another role the next day after being rejected the day before. That is something I’m going to have to learn. One of my favorite sayings is “That Setback is setting you up for a Comeback”. Which is always an encouragement to me.
It is a whole lot easier because I have one of the perfect dream teams behind me. My mother and sisters are my cheerleading team. I am in a lot and there has not been one show, concert, or play that I have looked out into the audience and not seen my mother out there. She has encouraged me to go to auditions even when I believed that there was no way possible for me make it, smiling smugly when I get the part. Not only physically has she been there but mentally and spiritually .Keeping your head right is very important in anything you do, and my family plays a huge role in that. My sisters never have any problems encouraging me or humbling me when needed. I am just grateful to have a supportive family around me. Cheering me on no matter what. So again being Broadway actress would be ideal as a job, but doing what I love is a reward in itself.
