Us vs. The World
Long sleeves hide delicate fingers
And the same hands cover her teeth when she laughs
Proudly looking down at my bare arms
Because my sweatshirt fits her better than it does me
She walks on beaches the same way that
Lightning falls to earth
Beautiful and electric
Suspended silver beaming light into the sand
Happy, baby blue plastic
Amongst other things
Covers the ground, coveting
Stellar white seashells on her toes
The deep, dark purple
The bags under my eyes, they
Remind me about the importance of
The promises made in my car
The prolonged looks and constant
Unmistakable hand-holding
And the way she falls asleep in the passenger seat
Sleeping Beauty doesn’t have anything on her
Heartbeats like quiet, melodic footsteps
Soft rhythms heard only when
Her head is cradled against my chest
When I lean over to kiss her forehead
I smell lavender and compassion
And each time I get a reminder
That the way I dress makes her feel safe
That she knew I needed a hug
The Sun explodes all over again
Every particle colliding into me
Turning me into a lovely supernova
Still not as bright as her eyes, but
Prouder a galaxy ever could be
She doesn’t like the rain
I don’t know...
I used to be indifferent until
The rain started to catch in her hair like
Diamonds spilling onto golden threads
Gems rolling off of blonde satin
I swear, she’s
The most precious thing
I’ve ever laid eyes on
So let me explain
When I say I like the rain
I’m stretching the truth like taffy
Sweet and glossy and almost neon in attitude
I really do like the rain
I just like the way it looks on her better
Nobody can build bridges better than her
Listening to cards slide together
Exactly how my fingers interlock
When she grabs my hand
And pulls it closer to her chest
My heartbeat shuffles
Because she’s magic
Every little twist of hair
Tucked perfectly out of place
Each smile radiating
From her bright eyes
She is absolutely
Enchanting
My beautiful butterfly
Wings made out of late-night phone calls
And kisses on the forehead
Flying up and through the clouds
Away from the ground
And into the sky
That’s where she belongs
My angel
I started writing this poem
The first time she fell asleep on my shoulder
And since then
I only think in verses
She’s too heartwarming to be described
In normal speech
Too beautiful for words
Too smart for sentences
So I add a little rhythm
And a lot of passion
And hope she understands
That she means the whole world to me
I have never felt this strongly
I hope she understands
That I would move the world for her
Pushing mountains into the ground so she can see the sunset
Draining oceans so her perfect toes don’t get wet through her socks
Growing forests so she can have some shade
Freezing deserts so her ice cream doesn’t melt
Stealing glaciers to keep her room from getting too warm in the summer
There is nothing I wouldn’t do
I love her
I love you
