Understanding the Struggle

Mon, 06/09/2014 - 22:10 -- Ricimon
(Note: Each line in the 2nd and 4th stanzas are direct translations.)

Stereotypical. This norm is set too much.
Our brains are capable of wondrous things, yet we still
Categorize,
Separate,
Distinguish.
Just as the repulsive habits are disgraced,
So are the brilliant achievements ignored.

And I reach for greatness like all others.
And I feel determined to do so.
And I am confident in my abilities.

Yet I still hear that blasted phrase: “Typical Asian.”

Yes, I am Chinese.
I want to study well,
From night to morning, I am studying,
When I receive that good grade, I am elated,

(But no one understands my struggle.)

Sure Asians are smart,
Sure Asians get top marks,
But has anyone ever looked to
Find out why?
