The Truth Behind a Smile

They’ll never see me cry

Because it’s always behind closed doors.

And even if they did

They wouldn't know what for.

They think I’m over you

Because they see this masking smile.

But the mask only hides the broken pieces

That seem to stretch on for miles.

I look all around me

I search for some sign of relief.

But all that you left in your wake,

Is this bitter loneliness

And mind numbing grief.

So I put on the mask once again

And I abandon the fruitless search,

As the familiar faces start filing in

Who can never know that I’m hurt.
