The Troll Maiden and the Ninth Son

Yukio, a quiet and wise boy, met a troll maiden and became her friend.Never had she had a friend before, and this one helped the troll live.Young Yukio gave her a flower crownAnd sang her songs to ease her grief and sorrow. The troll maiden never felt such peace before,But it was not enough to erase the pain in her heart. One day, the troll maiden proposed to a fair knightWith promises of gifts and treasures. She promised him twelve horses, twelve mills,A mighty sword with fifteen golden rings and a silk shirt. But the fair knight decline the troll maidenFor she was not a Christian woman,And was nothing but a monster in his eyes. The fair knight left her while the troll maiden sobs loudlyAnd runs away to her home.Sobbing and crying, the troll maiden finds no comfortWhen young Yukio entered her home. The young boy rubs the troll's back as she cried,"Had I gotten that handsome knightI would've been freed from my torment." Yukio rubs the troll's back as he spoke,"I'm sorry you suffer like this, Troll Maiden."The young boy placed a kiss on the troll maiden's head. The troll maiden's body glowed brightAnd felt warmth spreading to her body.Standing there was not a troll,But a fair maiden with golden hair. She smiles and laughs as she twirls around. The maiden hugs Yukio and cries,"Thank you! Thank you, little one! Thank you! I'm free!"Yukio smiles as he held the maiden's handAnd walked her out of the mountains.A love like his will break any curseAs he sings a soothing song that his mother sang to him."Herr Mannelig, Her Mannelig . . ."
