Tree Girl

There was a girl

Encased in wood

They called her Tree Girl

Her fingertips

Poked from the bark

She peered through notches

She couldn’t move

So there she stayed

One with the tree

And when I saw you

I just hurt

Wanted to make you free

So I told everyone I know

There was someone inside

There was someone to help

The city gathered around

There were banners

There were crowds

Speeches of what would be

When that tree

Came down

I was to cut the ribbon

To hold the shovel

To break ground

Then the moment came

I could not wait

To let you out

I swung my axe

The wood it cracked

And you bled out

We tried to be careful

Tried to make sure

You wouldn’t get hurt

But I cut too deep

I hoped too hard

You were unsaveable

Tree Girl

Indelible Tree Girl

You tragedy, Tree Girl

I loved you, dear

Tree Girl

I’m sorry, my Tree Girl

I stand on red-stained ground

And choke on tears

Forgive me, please.
